We help and support teen parents
Bringing a new life into this world brings great joy, great challenge, and great change: He Matariki Teen Parent School is here to help teen parents find their way. We’ve got the resources and the networks to give you the best start possible in your parenting role, while also giving teen parents and pregnant teenagers a flexible, parent-friendly learning environment.
Our learning environment
He Matariki Teen Parent School is one of 25 purpose-built teen parent units around the country. Our learning environment is bright, modern and designed with young mums in mind. We have full kitchen facilities, a high-tech computer room, access to free childcare, free transport, free food and fantastic, light-filled study rooms. Students are treated with respect, and have a real say in how they learn.
He Matariki Teen Parent School is funded by the Ministry of Education, while the governance is proudly hosted by Whangārei Girls High School He Matariki has a capped roll of 35 students who can attend the school until their 20th birthday year, keeping our classroom numbers small and our teaching personal.
Our vision and values
The whakatauki oranga hou timatanga hou…. new life, new beginnings, captures the essence of everything we do at He Matariki, with the kaupapa that students’ role as young parents is at the heart of their wellbeing and educational development.
We believe aroha and ngākau atawhai are essential and that together with values pono and tika ensure He Matariki is a safe and caring environment where young parents can thrive and grow.
